*Metabolic ECAL testing will be available from 1st September 2021 at our clinic in Staines
The gold standard for calculating metabolic rate and ability to burn fat.
Using ECAL allows for accurate management of your weight loss, weight gain, sports nutrition aims or body composition goals including the ability to:
What is the most accurate method to measure metabolic rate?
Most practitioners will use predictive equations in practice to measure resting metabolic rate (RMR) in dietary counselling to set energy intake goals for weight loss, weight gain or for specific body composition goals. However, multiple robust studies show that these equations may overestimate RMR and energy requirements ranging between around 10% to nearly 30% and particularly in obese individuals or those susceptible to obesity. Using equations to set weight loss goals is of high concerns as it may be impossible to achieve the goal using the energy requirements over-estimated by these equations. Luckily, we have found a solution to this at Nutrition Synergy by using ECAL, the most accurate device to measure resting metabolic rate.
ECAL uses what we call Indirect Calorimetry (IC) to calculate your resting energy expenditure (resting metabolic rate), which is the rate at which your body burns energy when it is at complete rest. IC is calculated by measuring the amount of oxygen used (VO2), and carbon dioxide released (VCO2) by your body. IC is the most accurate, and noninvasive measurements of a resting metabolic rate in an individual, it is the gold standard for assessing human metabolism.
Determine if your body is mainly burning fat or glucose for energy
Our bodies use fat and glucose as a main source of energy, however some of us burn more glucose than fat for fuel and this can lead to difficulty losing weight, constant hunger and weight gain.
ECAL gives measures if an individual is burning fat and to what level. This information can then be used to design specific nutrition programs to improve health. Metabolic tests can be performed during a consultation with one of our dietitians.
What does the ECAL testing involve?
The test is a simple 5 minute breathing test where you will be asked to relax and breath normally into a mouthpiece.
What information does this test give?
- Your requirement for energy at rest in calories (resting metabolic rate)
- How efficient your body is at burning fat vs glucose to create energy
- How efficient your cells are at creating and burning energy
The testing allows our dietitians and nutritionists to individualise the nutrition advice we give and determine what types of foods are best suited to your current metabolic state.
We will repeat the test in follow up sessions to determine whether dietary changes have resulted in change to your resting metabolism.
Effective weight management through metabolic health.
Obesity, diabetes, fatty liver, fatigue and infertility, are among some of the common health issues associated with a poor metabolism.
ECAL can help you lose weight and reverse chronic disease efficiently, furthermore, it has a wide range of benefits including feeling younger, more energized and sleep better.
With ECAL, our dietitians can accurately measure your metabolism and design a personalised food guide that will help you lose weight, gain energy and extend the healthy years of life.
